I dug out the WOCA (toy camera that uses 120 film like a Holga but with a glass lens) and took some photos this winter. Finally got the film processed but didn't make prints because I had experimented with multiple exposures and wasn't sure any of that would work...some seemed ok, but the single image shots were much more fun. I took the negatives and scanned them flat on the scanner...cuz i can't find the film holder thing to do it proper...and got images like this one. This is in Washington Sq Park...you can see the Empire St. Bldg on the top right. I need to scan it at a higher resolution so that it doesn't pixelate like this...but I will probably just end up layering it with some other image anyways.

It's a cold rainy day in NY so I headed over to the museum. I wanted to see a couple special exhibits but those required special ticketing which I did not notice on the webpage and didn't feel like hiking back to get the tix. So I enjoyed the rest of the place. For the following photos I mostly used a long exposure to get the image without using flash. I used my chin to steady the camera on most and my belly on the others. Who needs a tripod? ok, I do, cuz there were alot of blurry shots! Enjoy!

This guy needs a story! I don't know why, but he has such personality!

Here are a bunch of photos from the past two days!

In the beginning (Sunday) there were flakes!

They started to stick!

By Monday morning, my hood was covered!

That haze is the wind blowing up light snow...light yet painful when streaked across the face. However covering your face completely is not the answer...you need to see the ice patches while walking.

My building and it's 4' snow drift in the middle. Old lady with cane crossed it so I had to suck it up and go too. I survived.

It has been such a lovely day! First I went to the zoo. Then got a waffle. Then wandered up Madison Ave. Then crossed Central Park. It was cold but I survived! Here as some photos from the day....

The penguin habitat was dark. Little guys were cute to watch. I took some great arty pics of the blur of them swimming by...may share some soon...still thinking on how to work with them.

There was a tropical habitat at the zoo. Since this is suppose to be an art blog now...I'll describe what happened with these next few photos. I was outside in the cold semi dry air...walked into a hot humid habitat and the lens fogged up creating these cool misty looking images. If this happens and you don't want it to be this way it is best to just wait until your camera adjusts to the weather and it will unfog. I however found out there were snakes in this habit and got out of there before it had time to adjust. I was also concerned that this would be too drastic of a change for my camera and didn't want it expanding and contracting too much in one day. It seems to be ok.

Oh ya, and did I mention it's cold.

Top layer of the lake was frozen. Top layer of me was too! I'm tough!

Photo Plus Expo and Fall Foliage in Central Park

Today I went to the annual Photo Plus Expo. It was pretty much the same as last year except alot less fun swag. I like goofy little trinkets, but oh well....I really like the canvas print I'll be getting just for walking by (they run over $200) and I can't wait to use the free film and the flash diffuser I got! There were so many products out and I had to close my eyes as I passed all the lenses I desperately need!

I have found a great new business card idea. It's a trifold business card...they call it a mini brochure. They being Marathon. They have good stuff. I browsed their sample book and plan to steal many ideas! Also found my Christmas/New Years card....now to design it! I love Nations Photo Lab and they have a sale on press cards (post cards) that ends Thursday. Hopefully they will extend it, as they often do! I have so many ideas swirling in my head! Deciding will be the hardest part.

Also came up with an excellent idea for next year. I'm posting it because other photogs should steal the idea! On Halloween, take photos of the kids in costume and post it as a "treat" and along with the candy (cuz you want the kid to smile), hand the parent a business card/flyer to come back for Christmas photos. Wish I had thought of it sooner! I'm in a huge apartment building and they passed out flyers today for people to post on their door if they were handing out candy. This way the kids don't bother the others. Of course if I do this plan, I will have a friend help for security. Mr. Glock should do just fine! haa!

After the Expo I headed to Central Park to check out the Fall Foliage. It wasn't as exciting as everyone keeps making it sound. Maybe it's the desert girl in me. Yep, the leaves are falling. The red ones are pretty! I'm told other areas around the state have more and I need to take a day trip....uh, no. But I hope you enjoy the following .....

So the "Moving to NYC" portion of this blog is complete. I'm here! I will now be transitioning this into the art blog it was always intended to be.

What does this mean? I don't really know. My goal - get some work in galleries, create, live, enjoy! So.....how this will translate into the blog.....expect pretentious blabblings about my inspiration for a specific line of work. Commentary on other work I've seen. I'll try to throw some tips and tricks in the mix. Who knows!

I'm sure I will throw day to day stuff in every once in a while. I'll still tweet about random stuff throughout the day. Look to the right for my recent tweets if you are not on twitter. Tomorrow I will be at the day job until 9pm and the thought almost made me cry! It was perfect inspiration to get this side of my life going. I've got a job, now it's time to get the career!

This weekend is the PDN PhotoPlus Expo. I attended last year and loved it! I plan to soak up as much knowledge as possible. If you are in the NY area I can get you a free friend invite as the date has already passed to get your own free pass to the expo. Lots of free swag and technology tips! Guess what! Ok, so the title is much more exciting than reality. The zombies just stood around and I got cold so I didn't wait for them to move to the next spot. I know. I'm lame! But here's a couple zombies on their way to meet the rest. I love this photo because the only thing in focus is the girls bloody hand on the right. I was trying to hide from the wind and took this as I was lifting my camera. Happy accident! The ice cream truck behind them was a nice touch I thought!

Today was the Annual Pickle Festival. Great way to get sick! After 5 minutes and about that many different samples I was not feeling very well. Fun event though! Check out the kids face in this one! Definitely a pickle pucker!

And then I headed to South Seaport to check out the Amsterdam Market, etc. Basically just another farmers market but it's in the oldest "market" location and a pretty view....I got on the wrong bus (there are 3 different M15 buses and you have to read the name with the #, so dumb) but it turned out to be a good thing, because I walked the last little bit and got to see this beautiful view! I'm still in awe of the water and how beautiful it is. I still think, "Wow! I live here!"

I liked the tonal variations so I didn't bother to fix it. Obviously I don't have the quick one button panorama fix it software...but that's ok. I was under the Manhattan bridge and that's the Brooklyn bridge on the right. I walked past it to the Amsterdam Market. Perfect day!

Weekend Photo Wrap Up!

On Saturday night I went to a photographers Meetup group and we went to Roosevelt Island to take photos of the NYC skyline. Roosevelt is in between Manhattan and Queens. On Sunday I went to a huge graveyard connected to a church up on 153rd. Next we went to the Jumel Mansion. The lady married Aaron Burr after Jumel and George Washington stayed in this mansion for 6 weeks. That is the extremely short historical review! Next this lady, Marjorie Eliot, opens up her home every Sunday with folding chairs everywhere and she plays jazz piano with a couple guys on horns. They were good! I'm sleepy so I wanted to put the synopsis before the photos...I know...Lazy! But they are self explanatory! Enjoy!

This was my favorite grave. It has an iron door into the the ground that is locked up tight! The gate in front had the guys name on it. They must have been worried he would escape the dirt to lock him down so securely!

Well it turned out to just be a food festival. I was hoping for some outrageous stuff, but it was still fun and tasty! This took place on Governors Island which is south of Manhattan and in between Brooklyn and Staten Island. It is only open June to October 10. It used to be a military base. Now it's the biggest waste of real estate ever! All that land and empty buildings decaying away. Crazy. Anywho! It was a nice day to wander around and smell pig cooking! Amazingly no bacon.

Doesn't this just make your mouth water!!!

How bout this! Pig soup. So disgusting! I didn't try any. Why they put it in huge pickle barrels I will never know. Guess so you could see all the good parts to dig out of the slop!

Hillbilly band sang Glory Land Way. They were talented in their industry I'm sure.

This was the view from the conference location. So pretty. I took a break while the group was in session to cross the street and take this. Monday was crazy with all the glitches that normally happen. Usually they are easier to resolve, but since I've only been there a month it was a bit more challenging. No one but me and the bosses...and the poor staff who had to help us...noticed, so it's all good. So ya, Monday was not my favorite day. I was exhausted, but I'm a tuff girl! I can take it!

However! Tuesday night came and we did a scavenger hunt in downtown Boston.

This place was one of the clues...well, answer to a clue. Alot of people got it wrong and we saw them pointing to the top of a building...then another group copied them. That was funny! Sheep!

There is alot of great architecture in Boston. I wish I had time to sight see on my own, but at least I got to see it.

On the way home from dinner that night we passed this old firehouse. The driver told me that it still runs but they had to design special fire trucks because the doors for them are smaller than standard trucks these days. It's the oldest one in Boston. Obviously taken through the window...but I had to post it cuz it's the only real thing of history I think I saw.

There is a yacht club behind our hotel where I took this. Really pretty!

So all in all I survived the trip, but I just wish it had happened 6 months from now so that I (and my old body) could have fully enjoyed it. Still recovering from moving here! ha! Destiny seems to have forgiven me and didn't lose too much weight without her tuna.

Back to the grind now! Well....back to sleep! I know I promised this would be exciting but I'm exhausted...and there wasn't much excitement to share. Just work. But hey, I ate well! Food was good! I had a lobster roll and bluefish! So brave! They were both good. So a thumbs up to Boston!

Fashion Night Out!

Last night was the beginning of Fashion Week and a ton of stores were open late to of course...promote shopping for fashion!

First nourishment was required at the Russian Vodka Room! I ate duck liver pate! It was actually good! Also had some pirocki (sp?) and kasha w/ mushrooms....and we split 9 shots of infused vodka +1. (Ok, side note, now that I am employed I don't feel the need to justify every blog by specifying what was free or not...so for anyone who thinks it's any of their business...if I have an extravagant evening...I didn't pay for it...just assume so I don't have to bring this up again, thank you.)

So then I had to go back to work to get my laptop cuz I didn't want to carry it around...(going to Boston on Monday and have to take it....I'll actually take photos in Boston and have an exciting blog next week...this one you'll just have to feel the excitement as I share the details of the rest of the evening!! )

Excitement because...remembering it was Fashion Night Out and that I had seen that Saks 5th Ave was having some special entertainment in store, we headed over. It was crazy! There was a party on every floor. We stopped at the shoe floor and I saw the most awesomest pair of Chanel Shoes! They were only $1130 but Daniel wouldn't buy them for me. How rude! haa! These shoes were about 5" heals that had a textured strip of silver around the heal, they were almost like ankle boots but fitted and laced up the top, the sides were white soft fabric with some textured design swirling through it with black edging up the lace part and around the bottom through the heal...the black was the same swirly soft fabric as the white. These shoes are more than just shoes. They are art! Multiple aspects of contrast and textures! LOVE THEM! Must buy a lottery ticket today so I can go back and get them!

Then out the window we saw Rockefeller Center was decked out for the evening with red carpets and bands and models and crazy! So we headed out and wandered through the chaos. It was so NY! Loved it!

My legs are exhausted today from wearing heals all day yesterday. It's a new level of exercise I must continue. Was watching a show the other day where a guy said he loved a girl because she wore high heals everyday because she said flats are for quitters! I laughed! So, I'm not a quitter!....except, maybe today! I need tennis shoes and cushion!

Ok, off to see Aunt Linda for some Long Island shopping. Better shower first! ha!

A day in the life...specifically Sept 5

As I contemplated getting out of bed today I got a tweet about a tugboat race! Well, I didn't get out of bed fast enough because this is all I saw once I got there...

Right along the horizon you can see the smoke from one of the tugboats that was smoking like crazy and to the left of that you can see a row of tugs racing. They are much faster than I thought, but they were going down stream too. Still, it was a beautiful day so I strolled down and walked out on a pier. Took a seat, and enjoyed the morning.

I was so relaxed I couldn't hold the camera straight! ha!

Then it was time to go to this place I've been wanting to try for two weeks called Florencia 13. It's So Cal Mex Food so I just knew it had to be good!....well, it didn't open till 2pm and we had 3pm tickets to Fela on Broadway...more on that in a sec!

So I hung out in Washington Square Park for a little bit.

It was kind of windy today, but that kept it cool.

So since my restaurant was closed we went to the Gray Dog..They even have a gray dog! It was good food! Cute atmosphere too. I was starving.

This book store was right across the street. Made me think of Mary and Juan! I got a $3 book of Emily Dickinson poems to read on the subway.

Then...Off to Fela!

This was so amazing! I loved it! It was a sad story in the end, but the music, dancing and production of it all was outstanding! Fela Kuti is a Nigerian musician who was outspoken against the Nigerian government and thus harassed by them. Long story, look it up if you'd like. Cool show! I could even see it again, it was that good.

Now I'm home. Being lazy. I'm working tomorrow by choice. I don't get paid holidays so I am learning all the software I'm suppose to learn along the way. We'll see how much I can cram into my brain. It will be quiet though so that should help!

Ok, I really need to find out which artist is doing this work, cuz he has stuff in Battery Park...which I've posted before. I like it! BUT, come on NY art deciders...variety would be nice. One artist in Tucson getting all the work is one thing...but in NY!???? I'm not a sculpture artist, but I can feel their pain! Not fair. But I do like this artists work, it's good and fun. OH well.

So anyways!

Got this pic of April and Jim in the subway on Monday night! I know...it's Thursday, but I've been catching up on sleep! We went to GreenPoint Brooklyn where Jim's dad grew up and ate at a Polish Restaurant. It was good stuff!

After I left them I took this pic outside my building. It looked almost exactly like that too. With the clouds and the lights of the city glowing on them, it was really cool.....then I realized I left my keys at work. The super wanted $25 to break into my apartment with a crowbar. I asked for a master key, but guess they don't have those. Then it turned out he couldn't break me in because I had the deadbolt locked. I will forever use the deadbolt anywhere I live...which I've already been doing, but now for sure! So I ended up going back to work and banging on the door until the cleaning lady let me in. The security guard at home asked why I didn't give a friend a key....I've only been her a couple months....I don't know anyone well enough to give a key to. Waaaahhh! I felt lonely for five seconds. I'm ok now.

Well...not much else exciting has happened this week. Lady at work needs to learn how to communicate, or I need to learn how to figure her out soon. Too many grey hairs for an easy assignment. But I've ranted enough about that today.

I'm rain boot shopping! Can't use the rubbery ones due to my lovely allergies, so I'm scouting out good thick leather ones. Found a pair at Nine West that would be perfect...Now I need to find them on sale. I think this calls for a Macy's trip this weekend! Wooo! Some kid lost a finger on their wooden escalators. Dumb kid....yes, if you stick your finger in between moving objects, it might not come back to you! Duh! Of course the mother is suing...but shouldn't she have been paying attention to her child??? I say, call CPS! But then again, I don't have kids and can't possibly understand....cuz 2 square feet of space is too wide to notice what the kid is up to....YES I AM in a ranting mood! Sorry! But hey, there was a baby on the train that loved me tonight. She had cute dimples and just kept babbling away. Her parents said they didn't know what was up with her. She just kept talking to me and laughing. Then they tried to get her to look at them and she wasn't having it. So they got annoyed. Ha! Their kid liked me better! ok, enough babbling. Good night!

Today I met April and Jim at Coney Island!

They were not in the mood for a photo op so I stole this off Jim's facebook page! Aren't they cute!

I got there first so I went down to the beach. It was sprinkling a little bit, but I wanted to put my feet in the water. It was cold, but not too bad.

It was very relaxing to just stand there and feel the water come over my feet and listen to the sounds of it.

Then April and Jim got there and we stopped by Nathan's hot dog stand. I got cheese fries because I'm not a huge fan of the dogs and they got the dogs. Then it started to rain so we went to IKEA! Traffic was insane but they had Jim's grandparents car. The plan was for me to buy a bed and have it delivered since I was told it was a flat rate of $30ish to do so. I was told wrong. It was $99. After much deliberation we decided to see if it would fit in the car. With the back open and the back seat down it fit in. I road home on top of all of it and couldn't feel my leg for awhile after that. It was not attractive I'm sure...but it worked.

Jim gets points for bloodshed! That's his spot on the box. He got a pretty decent slice on his finger. Not the funnest moment I'm sure.

And now I have a lovely futon to sleep on! Here it is in couch form. It has a very firm mattress which I needed desperately! Don't you love how the pillows coordinate so lovely! ha! I need to do laundry, but wasn't in the mood tonight. Putting the frame together was enough. I'm so glad to be sleeping on something solid tonight. My old body just couldn't take anymore! Tho I appreciated the air mattress, it was definitely time to retire it.

Well, I am now ready for a good nights sleep! It's not even 9pm, but I hear the futon calling to me! I may have to name it! I love it so! ha!

My sisters and their families came to visit for a couple days!!!

Our sweet mother sent Arizona shirts ahead of time so that we could take this photo for her! Aren't we adorable! There are people in my neighborhood who pass out flyers to boycott AZ due to the immigration stuff, so we waited till we were in a tourist area to take the picture...don't need the neighbors thinking we are making a statement. We all just attended the UA and are from AZ. The shirts are really nice too. So soft and I will definitely wear mine all winter!

We went to the elevated acre to watch an outdoor showing of "The Muppets Take Manhattan". It was cute! We only stayed for half because our old bodies couldn't take sitting on the ground that long and the kids weren't as amused by Kermit as we were!! ha!

So we went to ride the Staten Island Ferry! They are all posing down there in the middle....it's a big entrance!

Johnny and Joshua took the car up to my place and the rest of us took April to Penn Station. She stayed at her Grandparent-in-Laws for the nights. Then we headed up north to my apartment!

I can't imagine why April didn't want to stay with us!!! 3 air mattresses lined up just fine! If you squint you can see the clock says 1:25am. We had a fun full day and it really didn't matter what we were sleeping on at that point.

The next day I had to work so they toured the city and we met up at Bryant Park then headed home. We hung out by the river for a while before sending April on her way back to the inlaws. Then we got drinks at Dunkin Donuts and came back to play a game. I forget the name, but basically you have to get people to guess a word or phrase without using the words. It was alot of fun! Once everyone was laying down Destiny came out. Caleb and Becky got to pet her, but that was it. She walked all around until someone got up, then she darted away and hid. She's just antisocial! Oh well. We had breakfast this morning and the Jones' were on their way home. I'll see April and Jim tomorrow for lunch. I got to see Jim and Alex before their Yankees game on Wednesday for about an hour. That was nice! Alex had to go home for school and I didn't know we were going to get a chance to see each other so I didn't have my camera on me. I know, bad photographer. Next time! I'll take my camera tomorrow and make them smile while we lunch!

Today I am going to go cash my paycheck and bed shop.....maybe after my nap! zzzzz!

Well the event had a really cool flyer and website. However it was not as exciting once I arrived. I was expecting the stuff they show on tv. It started at 11am so I got there about noon to make sure I didn't have to listen to introductions or whatever. NYers are pretty prompt so I figured the action would be in full force by then. I was wrong. Was still cool and I got to see some of the East Village I hadn't before. This was held at Tompkin Square Park.

They were doing some warmups. This guy was pretty good! He kept jumping over the orange tape without warning but I saw this one coming. He went up the right ramp and down the middle one.

This guy came down backwards. Not sure if it was on purpose and he lost his footing. Some guy covered for him and blamed it on the ramp. Very curious to see what the photographer on the left got. He kept doing these ground shots. I guess if he had a wide enough angled lens he could have gotten more than the bottom of the board...never know!

This kid showed up to watch and started participating. Overheard one of the old guys talking about how he came out of no where and is awesome. And by old, I mean mid 40s. Really didn't expect to see anyone over 25 doing tricks on a bike. I know I wouldn't be up for it!

After this I went to the Hells Kitchen flea market but it was not very good. Now that I'm employed I'm looking for furniture. I did get a Colombian Empanada with Mexican Quacamole. That's what the lady said. Both were good! The quac was liquid so I'm not sure what part of Mexico but at least it was hot! Also got a Passion Fruit drink. All this for $2.50! Cheapest meal out in NY besides a nasty hot dog! And this was good! I'd eat another one! On my way to this flea market I passed a bunch of fabric stores. One had fabric with a mix of white fluff and feathers. It was sooo cool! If I'm ever crazy enough to get married, I want my dress made out of this fabric!!! There was a smelly guy staring at me or I would have stopped for a photo. I stay alert!

Well off to decide what to do this evening. Must find fun!

It went well. Learned a ton of stuff. Have a ton more to learn. Should be good. I decided not to go to the theater companies 2nd interview. I remembered they were an "If I'm desperate" application. I think I was blinded by the thought of free tickets....but I really can't take all the singing. So I'm sure it was a good decision. I'm really tired and sticky so this is one of the least exciting blogs ever! Let me find a photo to jazz it up a bit.....

Arizona won! I don't really care, I just like to people watch at baseball games mostly.

This is the view from our seats. It was Mets Hall of Fame day so we got free hats! Woo! Darryl Strawberry was inducted with a few others.

The control booth was really cool. They have a window (obviously) so that everyone can look in at them.

This however was my favorite view from the stadium! Chop Shops!!! Who knew they closed on Sundays. I'm sure if they needed a body dumped they'd open up! haaa!

Well it's only 8pm but I'm exhausted. Time to kick back with Destiny and relax.

Well after this beautiful view I heard from Rashell, her 2 yr old nephew passed away in the night. Sounded like SIDS but I don't know. Not sure that can happen at 2 yrs old. Kinda put a downer on the day. So I went to the Pastry shop.

Another downer on the day...it wasn't that good. The blueberry layers were good but the cake part was dry and not very flavorful. But it was sugar, so who's complaining! I'll go back to something chocolate or struedel next time!

I was going to go to a play in the park tonight, but I'm not in the mood. I got a few dvds at the library to watch, but may just stare at the City Gym boys for a while longer! They really improve the mood!

Went to an excellent Korean restaurant last night in Greenwich. It is right around the corner from the Manhattan Theatre Source where I had 2 of my photos in a show a couple years ago! Daniel ordered the food in Korean and I smiled and nodded. We had 3 different kinds of kimchi! One of them looked like what Becky and Johnny made when they got back from Korea, but I don't remember that version tasting quite the same! Maybe it's similar to when white folk try to make tamales! ha! Anywho, the main course was ribs and a spicy pork dish. Both equally amazing on different scales. It's served with big pieces of lettuce and 'topping' stuff and you make lettuce wraps to eat it. There was a chili paste that I swear tasted exactly like a salidito! I need to find the recipe! Reminded me of home! After dinner we walked around and found 55 Bar. I'm told it's an institution! We listened to Peter Fisher and his band play some funky jazz. He has a keyboard that is very 70's sounding. They did an excellent job!

Yesterday I did some grocery shopping and wanted to try to cook some fish. So I went to the counter and asked the lady what fish was easy to cook. She gave me the biggest "what?" look I've ever seen. I told her I was from Arizona and had never cooked any (well, stuff out of box I have, but not raw straight for the sea type stuff). So she recommended the flounder and told me to cook it with garlic for 2 minutes on each side.

Isn't it pretty! It smelled a little fishy but not too bad.

Along with the garlic I threw in some cilantro! It smelled so good in the store and I was caught by a worker sniffing it up. He thought I was crazy. Can't imagine why! I nicely put the cilantro in my cart and moved on!

The final result became scrambled flounder because my spatula wasn't big enough. It ended up not having any taste at all. I don't like a fishy taste, but this was an absolutely nothing taste. I even gave a bite to Destiny. She ate it because she is a pig, but she didn't ask for more. I found some wasabi sauce real cheap so that helped it all go down, and of course the grapes! Those were extra yummy! What a healthy brunch eh! Hopefully the tasteless flounder had enough omega 3's to make it worth the bother!

Brooklyn Bridge Park @ Pier 1

Every Thursday during summer this park will have free movies. They call it Movies with a View.

No kidding on the view part! So pretty! Well As you can see it was packed. Off to the right I found some stone steps to sit on where I could see the screen....but that lasted about 5 minutes before my backside went numb. My friend Laura was suppose to come but couldn't make it at the last minute. I am not one to sit home alone when there is so much to do here so I went anyways. This also gave me the freedom to leave when my butt just couldn't take any more! Took some photos in the area since I was out there.

This is the lower end of Manhattan...also what you see in the top pic, just minus the crowd! The Statue of Liberty is out to the left, but a bit too far to get a decent shot of. Little cruise boats kept going by. A few had live bands playing on them, others djs. Looked like a lot of fun but a few of them were so packed it looked dangerous. I'd be the only person at the party in a life vest! Bet if I painted one I could pretend it was an artistic fashion statement!

On my way back to the train I saw this beautiful dark alley! No, I didn't walk down it. I was on a main street with a bunch of people around. Had to take the picture though! Love the stone brick streets!

When I got back to my neighborhood I passed a guy who asked why I never called him. I assumed this was a dumb line and blew him off. Then he said HEY! and I gave him the 'come closer and I'll kill you look' and then realized we'd met my first day here. He was really nice that day until we exchanged numbers. Well, he stayed nice, but made inappropriate suggestions for entertainment. I reminded him that was why I never called. Geesh!

It's Friday now and I have spicy dinner plans with a mature non-forward man so that will be nice and refreshing!

So what's the worst thing you can say at an interview with Microsoft? "I have a Mac!" And yes, I said it. We were having a good ole time chatting away and she asked if I had a computer at home. 'I have a Mac' is my standard reply because people always ask what kind. It just came out. Fortunately she saw past my lowly Mac status and still offered me the position. She even gave me updated Microsoft Office for Macs software! Woot! Both of the people I met today were great and will be very nice to work with. I tried to negotiate a higher salary but that did not pan out. So, I'll just be a semi-starving artist for now!

Tonight I went to hear a photographer discuss his work. He did great and I liked his work. However many times at these events there is one in the crowd that likes to ask questions to make themselves look smart. They throw out technical specs and drop names in the supposed questions so that everyone else will ooo and ahhh at their greatness. Tonight, there were 5 of these types. The guy held up really well and was very polite. He gets a gold star!

Ok, I have to fill out paperwork for the job, so I better get to it. Oh ya, and the Monday interview pays more, but less nice people...and I haven't heard anything. So, going with what I gots!

China Town!

Spent Sunday evening in China Town! Ate at Nice Green Bo. It's extremely reasonable and has good food. Plus there is an ice cream shop across the street! You know I loved that! Will definitely be taking visitors there.

Had an interview today that seemed to go ok. They will decide this week, so at least they won't drag it out like everyone else. Tomorrow I have another interview. This job is only a one year contract which I will take if nothing else comes along, but that just means job hunting again in 9 months or so. Yuck! Right now I'm temping at a newly developed Hedge Fund company. The Executive Assistant has been planning to quit and today she came in and made it official. I didn't get the impression this was the original plan. I don't understand the tension. The big boss is a bit gruff when it comes to work, but at lunch he's a regular guy...regular guy that has been buying our lunches, so you know my opinion is skewed! haa! Really, I've lost ten pounds since I moved here! Anyways, I'm not sure I would have a chance for that position since I keep taking time off to interview, but I can't temp forever. We'll see what happens.

Todays Adventure!

Met a great guy named Daniel who took me to Randazzo in Brooklyn for Seafood! He heard they had great reviews and here is one more!

I ate raw clams for the first time in my life. They are basically a pinker version of oysters so I was scared, but went for it. They were fresh so they smelled salty but not fishy. I covered it in hot sauce just in case! Then I had fried calamari and mussels. Also first timers. Then some mystery meat that might have been conch. I had conch fritters in Key West but that was a totally different experience. THEN! The highlight of the meal was broiled tilapia. I never knew fish could taste so good. Sorry Long John Silver, I've got a new favorite fish! That came with a side of fried zucchini! Yes! I am feeling fatter than ever! I am eating at home, but when every meal is budgeted to the penny, it's not as enjoyable. So this was a wonderful treat! Then we went for a walk around SoHo and the West Village. Love these areas! Oh and we got ice cream! Yummy! I don't need dinner for sure! It was a great day! Not just for the food, we had fun hanging out too. As soon as I have a real paycheck I will return the favor!

Burning Spear at Battery Park

First a quick update. I never heard from the art dealer again...guess they are going to believe the jerk. I don't want to ever see him again, so it's probably for the best.

I do have a temp job starting tomorrow. They are ok with me taking off for interviews and they are hiring too! If I do well there (which I will because all I'm doing is creating a computer file system) they may have something permanent for me. I also have an interview Monday and Tuesday morning. Things are looking up a bit.

Now for the fun part of my day! I went to a free Rastafarian concert in Battery Park. It is similar to Reggae but much peppier for anyone who didn't know. I was in a slow groove mood, but enjoyed it still. Here are some pics!

Well, I better get to bed since I have to work in the morning! Woo hoo!

Underwear Run

Every year before the NY Triathalon there is a fun run, ran in underwear! Here are some of my favorite runners...

I entered the park through the Columbus Circle area ... because it meant the least amount of walking!! and on the way in saw this really good jazz band playing.

On the way out this guy was making sand art. I was only in there for less than an hour and he hadn't started when I went in...

NY Philharmonic

They held a free concert in the park. I was amazed at how many people brought their kids. There were fireworks scheduled for after the concert....but still. Classical music and children just seemed like an odd mix to me...but ok!

The clouds were beautiful! You can see some of the crowd in the bottom. They estimated the night before had 30,000 in attendance and that was knowing there wouldn't be fireworks....I do not know how to estimate crowds, but it was packed.

I found a pretty spot under a tree. There were a bunch of fireflies lighting up the grass. I didn't have my tripod or I would have tried to get a pic of some of them. Maybe next time!

I did get this shot without a tripod! Not to bad on my wobbly feet. Climbed two sets of escalators that were broken today. They are much worse than stairs. I'm actually almost used to the stairs...almost! Anyways, I liked this house...3 in one I guess...or 300 in there, who knows.

So that was my exciting outing for tonight! Wooo! 2 more interviews tomorrow! Heading to bed soon to rest up! Night Night!

Interviews Week

I have had a million interviews this week...or so it seems.
Had two already today. One was back to an agency to meet a higher up who has a contact at a place who is very picky about who they want. So he had me take tests to verify I know my stuff...uh, I do...so now he is scheduling an interview for me with them. Then I went to interview at a theater company. They only work 35 hrs a week, but sometimes over, but they pay full insurance premiums, free theater tix, retirement fund, etc. so the perks would make up the difference in the 5 hours. Unfortunately it's going to be 3 weeks before they hire. Tomorrow I have an interview with Microsoft. Just a phone interview then they will decide on the in person. Let's hope my phone cooperates. I have three reply calls in to schedule interviews from messages I got while in the other interviews....ok, I'm not even quite sure what I just said. Palm Pilot is my new best friend. I think a nap is in order.

The grid of streets through Manhattan are on a 30 degree angle from exact north south...something like that. See the link for full scientific details. Today, the sun set in alignment with the streets. Thus naming the occasion Manhattanhenge like Stonehenge in England.

The event was suppose to peak at 8:24pm but by then the sun was gone. I got this one at 8:18pm. Guess science isn't always perfect....or maybe I was at a lower point? Who knows.

It was a nice low key event to photograph while my stomach is recovering from the gross chorizo I bought last night. Oh how I miss Anita St. Market!....I'll survive.

Green Flea

No...not more bugs, just the flea market near the Museum of Natural History. Went Photo Shopping. Kind of like window shopping but I take a photo of pretty things so I don't feel like it was a total loss wandering around in the humidity for nothing! I have been feeling the "create" urge for a few days now and knew I needed to find something to work with. So I went on a search for textures. This is my favorite creation from todays photos...

There are three others. I like to have ten in a series so I'll keep working. I did take some of fruit and mixed them together. They kinda go with this one due to the round organic shapes...we'll see. I'm working on something to submit to the galleries and this may be part of it...but at least the artist groove is kicking in through the job hunting stress and I'm feeling human again!

Here's a straight fruit shot...so pretty I didn't want to mess with this one....except I ended up using it with some blue berries...still working on that image.

I also got a tomato plant for $3 that already has a tomato on it! Hopefully I won't kill it....and Destiny won't eat it. I'll take pics if it survives!

3 flies & a toilet

As punishment for the trauma I caused Destiny in moving her to NY she has resigned from fly killing duty. Somehow 3 found their way in and no matter how much I begged, she refused to get rid of them.

So today I went and bought a fly swatter...because dangling duct tape didn't trick them like fly tape....and in less than five minutes I had killed all three flies and cleaned the toilet....got the scrub brush while I was out too.

Destiny does not appreciate my gloating and went and hid behind the couch....and by couch I mean park bench. (for those of you who don't know the park bench story...it was on my porch, couch was too big to bring, it came apart and tucked nicely in the truck and is now my couch. Has a blanket over it with pillows, and is actually working out ok.)

Looks like I'm not working tonight and the humidity is still effecting my brain. Must find entertainment! I know you love to read about my fly killing escapades, but oh well. On to funner stuff!

few days wrap up...

Haven't posted much lately because my life had mostly been job hunting and not a whole lot of excitement....but I have done some stuff. I made a friend and we went to a Latin Alternative Music Day at the same stage in Central Park I saw the Turkish bands play. The ad said there would be cumbias etc, but .... uh, no. The first band rapped in spanish. Sounded the same as any other rap song. The second band was from spain, and although talented, kept banging on some piece of metal and gave me a head ache. I sound like an old person, but I can't even describe the music. Guess "Alternative" was the key word...the Latin part just describe the language it was in. So anyways, my new friend and I decided to leave and we met another girl and just wandered the city and chatted. It was really nice. OH here is a pic of the headache band....

Guy in the middle was playing keyboards and hitting the metal thing...and wearing very short shorts. I would not want to be in the front row!

So anyways, on the way to that concert I saw a restaurant called Gray Papaya and made a mental note to go back and check it out when I had cash. Then one of my new friends mentioned it being a cheap good hotdog place...So I stopped by yesterday on my way to my first day of work.

Well turns out it isn't a "restaurant"...with good ac I was hoping to sit and enjoy. You walk in and order your dog and there are some tall counters to stand at if needed, but no ac, no chairs...explains the cheap I guess. Now in my opinion, hot dogs need relish...but that is not a NY thing so I'm finding it hard to get into them. They have ketchup and mustard, and this place even had kraut....gross. The dog was ok, but what I will go back for was the Papaya drink! So delicious! They even have a coconut one and some others. That made the trip worth it.

This was at 72nd St so I wandered around with my hotdog and found this.....

Looked alot like a pile of poo to me so I had to go see what the deal was.

Turns out it was just a chopped off head....

The architecture here (and the whole city) is so beautiful! I love how people used to take time in building and make things look good.

When I'm rich and famous I'm going to build a home with this much detail!

Well, my plan to sit and enjoy the hotdog didn't fly so I headed down to Times Square to wander around. I didn't start work until 8:30 and it was only 5 at this point.

Even Elmo is looking for work...or the Planet Hollywood can't attract big names anymore and called him in!

So about the job. It's doing data entry of test results for a fertility clinic. I learned how to do the easy stuff and then the doc dictated the stuff I didn't understand. Was there till 2am. He is suppose to call me today to let me know when and if to come in. I think he is checking my work...which I know is perfect, but I got more done than he expected, so he was worried. Hopefully he will keep me working. I thought it was a permanent job as explained....and the ad made it sound full time...but obviously both are in question now. On the way home the train made every stop instead of running express so it took me an hour to get home when it only took 1/2 hr to get there. I'll bring my ipod tonight for sure. Still at 3am there were people everywhere so I was as safe as I'd ever be. No worries there! By the time I got to bed it was 4am. Then Destiny woke me at 5am. Then my alarm went off at 7am. I went back to sleep of course since it's Saturday and I know the agencies wouldn't be calling. Then at 9am it was too bright in here to sleep, so I covered my head and went back to sleep till about 11:30am. I've already done a bunch of job hunting today so I may take a nap soon. It's 2pm and cloudy now...might be a good time! If I don't work tonight, I promise to do something fun...and free! I love this city!

The Queen! ...of England!

When I said the Queen, numerous people asked "of what?" So don't feel alone, cuz you weren't!

That white spec is what the folks in my little crowd thought was her hat at the British Garden in Hanover Square.

Here "she" is running to her car....UH, whats with all the security, yet she walks across the street in open view to her car alone? At this point I was convinced the Queen had to be one of the other hats in the crowd, cuz, really? Everyone by me was sooo thrilled I kept this opinion to myself.

And from seeing a pic of her giving the speech at the UN she was wearing a taupe color hat...which I also noticed in the crowd, so technically I sort of saw the queen today. Just didn't get a pic. Unless she changed and liked running around by herself. Is it bad that I didn't even realize she had a husband till today? Somehow he is only a prince. I do not understand royalty stuff. Anywho, it was still fun. Had fun chatting with the group I was around. Someone commented that she should be the only one to wear a hat so I added, she should have worn her crown. If I were a queen, I would!

Fireworks...sort of!

Macy's Fireworks in Kermit Green! (my Mothers adjective!) I was about ten blocks too far north due to a hill or something. I thought they'd be higher in the air so I didn't go down ahead of time. A little old lady practically yelled at me to go down...by the time I hiked it, the show would have been over. Next year. Maybe I'll go to Jersey to get a NYC backdrop on them...no promises.

Columbia University put on their own and it looked like they were exploding out of the side of this building. Note half a firework in center.

Excellent photography skills, I know! There was just too much light pollution so I went with it for artistic effect....someday I'll justify that comment! haaa! For now...maybe this will become a layer in one of my pieces...who knows!

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest - Coney Island

This was really gross. They soak the bread to make it go down easier. The guy in the red hat used koolaid or something red...probably helped the taste, but it didn't help him win.

Joey Chestnut was the reigning champ and won again! I'm sure his mother is proud.

I went to put my feet in the water...heard it was 100 degrees out, but look! Couldn't see the water and wasn't braving all this.

Wasn't braving these either but some guy looked pretty happy with them so I asked to take a pic. His wife thought it was hilarious.

Fun times!

Chillin at home with Destiny now. Made a bunch of chicken yesterday courtesy of the Jones'! Yes, I spent the cash on groceries, not pastries! Then, when I went to put it in the fridge I dumped half on the floor. So Destiny is thrilled! She'll be eating like a queen all week. I don't know what happened, but I can cook on the east coast. It was good chicken. I ate the clean stuff just now, quite impressed with my new skill!

Fireworks tonight! I'm just going to photo from my hood, since the only way to get a good shot would be from Jersey anyways, and I don't feel like going that far. We'll see how it goes.

Turkish Music Day

All summer long there are free concerts at parks around town and today the mainstage at Central Park had Turkish music. It was cool to listen to, but boring to watch. I would like to hear it in the background at a party or something like that. Had a good beat.

After yesterday treck through Central Park, I decided to take the subway around today. I'm on the west and this was on the east, so I made a loop around the bottom via my favorite train, the 7! That left me with only 8 blocks of walking when I got off! Much better than the miles I wandered yesterday!

Stopped by El Mundo on the way home and got a folding chair and dinner tray type table to use as a desk. My back has been killing me and I think it's from the hunched over job hunting since I feel good when I wake up in the morning, so it's not the air mattress. It feels nice to sit proper-ish. I only spent $13! Cheaper than a chiropractor. Also, I am now paranoid to buy a mattress. Holister and Abercrombie in the good areas of town have had bed bug infestations at their stores in the last two weeks. I don't shop there, but if they are there...where else are they! Ok, I'm itchy just writing that.
